826 Valencia is expanding into the Tenderloin thanks to a three-year, $500,000 grant from an anonymous foundation, the Examiner reports. The non-profit, co-founded by Ninive Calegari and Dave Eggers, will open its second SF location as early as August 2015.
The new space will be used to cultivate writing skills for 2,000 local students. And it's likely that it will also include a retail store much like the Pirate Store at the original Valencia location—where students' publications are for sale, in addition to various trinkets and goodies that go along with the store's theme. Plan to visit the original store in the next few months to make a few purchases and help toward the $2 million goal for securing the Tenderloin location.
