The San Francisco Business Times released its annual ranking of the Bay Area's 100 largest employers, and Macy's has landed on the list at number 17. While the department store's 7,054 Bay Area employees pale in comparison to top dog Kaiser Permanente's more than 30,000 workers, making the list is still a coup for the retailer: Macy's is the largest newcomer to make the cut.
According to the Business Times, the largest employers list "ranks the Bay Area's biggest employers on number of workers in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo counties, and the city of Palo Alto." Macy's earned a spot thanks to employees at both Macy's and Bloomingdales stores in the Bay Area, as well as the 650 workers in the San Francisco-based Macys.com e-commerce division. Online shopping may be the future, but brick-and-mortar retail is clearly still alive.
