Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Dema Grim's eponymous clothing boutique has been on Valencia Street since before there was Ritual Coffee (their current next-door neighbors), 826 Valencia and Paxton Gate. When Dema opened, New College was just down the street, X21 was packed with dusty, midcentury-modern furniture, the sidewalks were narrow and bumpy and the Mission was generally a scarier place. It's hard to remember such a time, isn't it? Grim has been offering up her own modern interpretations of vintage classics, plus brands including Wendy Maves, Michael Stars and Level 99, for 15 years. On Saturday from 6 to 10pm they're celebrating with 20 percent off, Mission Minis cupcakes (busy folks this week!), bubbly, and live music. To longevity!
