Did you hear? The waves are going off at about 30 feet, for the first time in three years creating the perfect conditions for the Maverick's Invitational one of the most exciting and terrifying surf competitions in the world. It's happening on Sunday (don't worry, you can still watch the 49ers later) at Pillar Point Beach in Half Moon Bay. But officials aren't letting anyone onto the sand this year. That's right, you won't be able to access the beach—they're blocking off all the access roads because the teensy sand patch and nearby bluffs are environmentally sensitive and possibly dangerous. So the Oceano Hotel and Spa at Half Moon Bay Harbor decided to capitalize on that accomodate everyone with a festival that day where you can watch a live stream of the competition. The first heat and the festival start at 8am.
It's happening outside on the hotel's grounds, and they'll have a JumboTron, the Grind out Hunger Skate Park, food trucks, music, drinks, merch and giveaways. And when the final heat is over (around 5pm), you could rub elbows with the surfers themselves. They'll stop by for photo ops, autographs and an awards ceremony.
Admission is $10 for advance tickets, $20 at the door if it's not sold out. But know that if you drive pretty much the only place to park is at the Half Moon Bay Airport a mile down the road for $15 (which will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of the Coastside)—and keep in mind there will be a bike valet. They also have fancy VIP tickets that include a parking pass and other perks for $100 up to $1,000. The hotel is at 280 Capistrano Road in Half Moon Bay. And if you get bored waiting around for those handsome young dudes, you can always get a massage.
