Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Tonight, Rare Device is opening a show with mixed media artist Karen Kang, who uses recycled and vintage materials including old ads and magazines from the 50's to create her works of art. Her new show, called Books Revisited, she incorporates old books, collage, paint, and drawing to create the pieces. She has previously shown all over Southern California, and SNL writer Bob Odenkirk owns her work... so it must be good! The opening party is tonight from 6 to 8pm, and the show runs through January 31.
We're also in the final days of local metalsmith and jewelery-maker Shana Astrachan's "holiday glamour boutique" at Rare Device. So if you've got some holiday gift money burning a hole in your pocket, head to the Western Addition to check out Astrachan's baubles, paper goods and beauty products before she closes up shop on Sunday, January 6 at 6pm. Whenever you happen to get there, also check out the shop/gallery's housewares, baby stuff, books, clothing, skincare and food items. All good stuff.
