Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

These days if you're shopping downtown at the Westfield mall, you have no reason to cross 5th street, unless you like to live dangerously. Or if you're this close to finishing that still life but need a watercolors restock from Pearl. But the developers behind Market Street Place hope to make the block friendly and shoppable when it opens (not until 2015) 250,000 square feet of retail space on six levels at 935 to 965 Market Street.

The developers are courting Nordstrom Rack, but since Marshall's vacated 901 Market Street (it moved to the Phalen Building at 760 Market Street), the owners, Hudson Pacific, are also batting their lashes at Nordstrom Rack. Which suitor will win over the Rack? Maybe it depends on how patient NR can be: Market Street Place doesn't plan its grand opening until early 2015.
