Toes of the Bay Area take comfort: Keen is here to keep you safe. With a patented toe protection design and innovative, breathable materials, Keen offers safety and comfort features in all shoe types from light sandals to hardcore hiking boots. Founded in Alameda but headquartered in Portland, the company has returned to its Bay Area roots and opened a signature Garage (the second of its kind) at 278 University Ave in Palo Alto this past Saturday.

The Peninsula location features timbers from the Alameda docks, Volkswagen Bug hoods from a Watsonville collector, and Douglas fir flooring harvested from local residences. And as much as the store's interior complements the area's emphasis on sustainability, the footwear fits the local, adventurous spirit. The shoes may not be the most delicate specimens, but they'd be welcome additions to any outdoor adventurer's closet. This Owyhee style would be perfect for that weekend run through Fort Funston—and chasing down those dogs in the waves? No sweat, mate.Esther Hahn
