Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Welcome to Racked SF's search for San Francisco's hottest trainer. Over the coming weeks, we'll profile a dozen-plus smoking candidates who work at local gyms and studios. (Not only do they look hot in spandex, but if you take their classes, you might someday look nearly as good.) Then, once you've gotten to know everyone, we'll host a March Madness-style showdown in which you get to vote for your favorite. Let the games begin!
Jack Cooney owns and operates Accelerate Sports Performance, where he will introduce you to all of these fun props (see the gallery) and many more. No matter what your sport of choice may be, Cooney will draw on the latest sports science to create a workout that makes you stronger and more efficient while doing it. Cooney also loves to surf, and wears a helmet while BBQing and watching the game—apparently he gives his all in every activity.

How long have you been a trainer?
"I have been in the athletic training, strength and conditioning, rehabilitation, and applied sports science world for the past 10 years working mostly with athletes from high school through the Olympic level, and everything in between."
What prompted you to become one—did you have a different career path in mind prior?
"I was always a science geek. My path was paved by years of athletics, and the injuries that came with hard play. Intrigued by the knowledge of the sports medicine teams that surrounded me and programmed and molded myself back to health whether the bump was minor or major, I wanted to attain that same knowledge and beyond, and utilize it through applied sports science to help others achieve their peak performance."
What classes do you teach, and which is your favorite/why?
"I own Accelerate Sports Performance. Our model specializes in individualized semi-private training. ASP focuses on performance enhancement and the development of young and elite athletes. Our application of cutting edge science and individually customized, innovative programming allows for optimal athletic achievement. Our focused team of specialists monitors and develops each athlete individually for peak performance, injury prevention and care, and to maximize career productivity and longevity in all sports."
Describe your training style: Are you drill sergeant? More laid back?
"I have implemented a culture recognized as a no-nonsense and motivating training environment. Our approach is to focus on perfection and education while presenting positive, measurable results.
We start each client off with a thorough assessment. This process involves taking a close look at your injury history, training experience, sport(s) of choice, physiological, and biomechanical factors involved in your sporting needs as well as many more factors."
What's one piece of advice everyone should hear before beginning a new workout?
"Understand the application and science behind your program: that knowledge will take you exactly where you need/want to be."
Tell us a fun fact about you—the weirder and wackier, the better.
"We like to keep it interesting at the house. You may see us wearing our helmets while we watch the game/BBQ which leads to some very interesting scenarios."
