Freeman's Sporting Club Closed, F.S.C. Barber Expanding

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Last week, we caught wind that Freeman's Sporting Club, a hipster-fancy place for bespoke menswear and more on Valencia, was closing its doors following a split between the owners of the shop and F.S.C Barber next door. The fate of the barbershop was unclear, but worry not, it's not only staying open but expanding—we're guessing to take over the former Freeman's space next door.

The space is already huge, but business must be booming. A spokeswoman for the barber franchise tells us:

The SF barbershop will be expanding to better serve its loyal patrons. Construction is set to begin shortly and will be completed later this year. Additional barber shop and apothecary space is planned. There are no plans for the barber shop to shutter and they are hiring now for the expanded space.

A relaunch under a new name: Fellow Barber by F.S.C. Barber (confused yet?) is planned for early September. We're relieved the Mission's hirsute will have a quality grooming option. As for Freeman's Sporting Club, owner Taavo Somer will continue to run shops in Tokyo and Manhattan, but for now at least, not in San Francisco.
