Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
The Philip Lim x Target collab launches at 8am in stores on Sunday. It's time for a game plan. Will you haul yourself to a Bay Area Target store very early on Sunday morning and snag a spot in line? Or will you set your alarm for the wee hours Saturday night to try to score a Boom! sweater online?
Check out our advice for the haul of your dreams:
1. Sign up for email alerts from Target here. Know that you will receive all Target emails, not just those regarding the collaboration. You can also Text STYLE to TARGET (827438) for mobile updates (text STOP to 827438 to cancel).
2. Set your alarm. If you'd rather shop from under the covers, know that former designer collections have landed online between midnight and 3:00am. Prepare to wake up accordingly.
3. Prioritize. Examine the whole collection and pricing and create a plan of attack. Racked National (whose editors know from collab shopping) suggest these items, which appear to be pulled directly from Lim's main line.
4. Know that the only shoes available in this collab are the men's Chelsea boot and high-top sneakers. Sad face.
5. Know your return rules. Target typically allows returns within 90 days with tags and receipt, both in-store and online. But special rules sometimes apply designer collaborations, so read your receipt carefully.
6. Don't give up. Returns happen, and you might get what you had your heart set on in upcoming weeks after someone else decides it's not her cup of tea.
If you're hitting the store in person, here are more pro-tips:
We're betting Serramonte and Colma won't have unruly crowds, plus they're practically next door to each other, so if you don't find what you want at one, you can run over to the other. If you happen to be in the North Bay, Novato is your only location, so you might consider heading east or south. If you're in San Jose, it's like a Target theme park over there.
To determine whether it's worth a commute, here's the full lookbook from Mr. Lim. There has been lots of talk that collabs have jumped the shark, but considering the success of last season's Prabal Gurung collaboratoin plus the madness at the Philip Lim press preview in New York, we're guessing this one wills sell out quickly.
