Quick, what's the preppiest city you can think of? Boston? New York with all its prep schools? Maybe a very New England-y place like Providence, Rhode Island? Nope, all wrong. According to Movato, a real estate website, our very own San Francisco is the preppiest city in the country.
To come up with the top 20 preppiest cities, the site looked at numbers of various institutions per capita including preppy clothing retailers, country clubs, equestrian centers, and private schools, as well as the total number of boarding or prep schools, percentage of college graduates with a bachelor's degree or higher, and median household income. Check out all 20 cities—which include Scottsdale, Honolulu, Raleigh and Seattle after SF—and a full rundown of the methodology here.
Here we were thinking the hipsters were taking over, meanwhile the prepsters have been surreptitiously dominating San Francisco style all along with their popped collars, khaki pants and polo shirts. Come to think of it, recent store openings including Gant Rugger, Steven Alan, C. Wonder and Jack Spade, plus a major revamp of Brooks Brothers, should have been a hint.
