Bull Riders Talk Style and Staying Alive on a 1,600-Pound Animal

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Earlier this month, the shiny wood floor where the Warriors typically play basketball was overrun by horses, cowboys, and 1,600-pound-plus bucking bulls. The Professional Bull Riders association was in town for the Ariat Invitational, and one brave bull rider would win nearly $43,000 (that turned out to be Brazilian Silvano Alves). Racked sat down with a few of these brave souls to get a glimpse into the world of bull riding, and, of course, to find out what they wear.

In addition to speaking to some of the bull riders, we also spoke with the lovely Mesa Pate, a 22-year-old stock contractor who breeds, buys, hauls and cares for the enormous animals who aim to buck riders off stat. Check them all out below.
