Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Thursdays at the Academy of Sciences are always a good time: you can simultaneously drink and learn about the natural world—if only science class had been such fun. And this Thursday's "NightLife" is extra awesome because the geniuses at the Academy are bringing fashion and style into the mix.
Here's all the science/style mingling you can expect:
6 to 9pm, Score Pop-Up Clothing Swap: Clean out your closet and bring the stuff—clothes, shoes, accessories—you no longer wear, and take home stuff other folks brought. It's a trash/treasure thing. Clothes left behind will be donated to Goodwill and Dress for Success.
8:00 to 8:45pm, Fashion Show: Head to African Hall where local designers Camelia Skikos, Sara Shepherd, Lucien Shapiro, Daniel Chimowitz, Ken Chen, and Lan Jaenicke will show their creations on the runway.
6:00 to 9:00 pm, Stylish Specimens and Artifacts: An anthropologist will share "vintage finds" from the Academy's research collection. Plus, learn why beetles and butterflies have evolved their beautiful and stylish color patterns.
6:00 to 10:00pm, Nail Art by TopCoat: Get your fingertips fashioned by expert nail artists.
6:00 to 10:00pm, Sundry Fashion and Beauty Activities: sewing artist Paul Nosa will make you a patch on the spot, learn folk-art tradition rag-rug making with the Crochet Jam, watch demos on how to create textiles with ink and water, and learn beauty tips and tricks from pros at Cinta Aveda Institute, all in the East Pavilion.
6:00 to 10:00 pm, Native American Jewelry: learn about the evolution of Native American style with a finely curated collection of silver jewelry upstairs in the Evolving Traditions gallery.
Plus music, style consults from Retrofit Republic, screen printing, and plenty of opportunities to get your photo snapped! So don your best geek chic and head to the park tonight for some beverages and biology all under one roof.
