It was a single doll's head that brought The Woods boutique from idea to fruition. The head led to a space which led to the opening of a store (read the whole head story at head led to a space">SF Gate). Owned and operated by sisters Sandy and Lisa Wood, The Woods is a curiosities shop and a reprieve from a world that, according to the women, grows "tamer and 'samer'" day by day. Find the range of one-of-a-kind wonders at this Mission shop that includes everything from vintage toys from a bygone era to taxidermy oddities.

On any given day, the store might stock: a plastic model for stuffing taxidermed squirrels, a toothbrush made of cat hair, pinecone tiaras, a glass bauble that holds inside two beetles sharing a picnic, and vintage pharmacy tins. Some of the goods are Lisa's own designs while Sandy's background as an interior designer helps the 300-square-feet space from ever feeling too cluttered. To see the wonders in person, head into The Woods Tuesdays through Sundays, from 12-6pm—and take home a conversation starter to add some weird into your life.
