Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

No, it's not the shape shifting alien of your sci-fi nightmares. Today, at least, the thing that's living in the Tenderloin is The Thing Quarterly, an object-based publication produced by artists Jonn Herschend and Will Rogan. Each "issue" is an object designed by a different contributor. Past things include a vinyl picture disc from Rodarte, a limited-edition switchblade by James Franco, and a David Eggers-penned shower curtain.

While most people acquire The Thing in the mail, some of you clearly dream of an entire Thing-themed store. That dream is now a reality. Head over to 447 O'Farrell Street, where The Thing has opened The Shop, "featuring astounding things" by Matt Singer, Sleepy Jones, Alexes Bowyer, Nathan Lynch, Tucker Nichols, Alicia McCarthy, Gwen Allen, Jason Jägel, Thomas Clark, Chris Johanson, Ritual Roasters, Atlier Dion, and paintings by the salty Painter Jeremy Coon. The Shop is open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm. On Saturday, you can even stop by from 3 to 6 pm for a special celebration…thing.
