Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Anyone lucky enough to live in San Francisco knows that our city is fabulous, but East Coast media outlets occasionally need a swanky party to trigger a serious case of Bay envy—a party like the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco's Mid-Winter Gala.
Black cars were a little harder to come by on Saturday as the fanciest of SF's fancy set flocked to the Legion of Honor for dinner, dancing, and a DJ set by the Misshapes. To prepare jet-setters for a weekend by the Bay, Harper's Bazaar turned to SF It Girl (and Gala Junior Committee Co-Chair) Vanessa Getty for a list of places in the city that everyone should know.
It's no surprise that Vanessa picked Union Square for luxury shopping, name-checking Gala-sponsor Ferregamo in the process. Fillmore favorite Curve was another expected addition to Getty's list; she attended the Rona Pfeiffer trunk show at the boutique in February. Getty's picks, however, extended beyond chichi boutiques: She's also a fan of the Bay Bridge lights, the Ferry Building Farmer's Market, and Flora Grubb Gardens… in Bayview. (She described Flora Grubb as the "go-to destination for unique plants and garden accessories." High praise, indeed.)
While we didn't see any Western Addition stores among Vanessa's faves, we're holding out hope that whimsical shops like Perish Trust (reopening next week) and Rare Device make their way onto her next list: after all, both are just steps away from The Mill, V's favorite coffee house.
