Your First Look at Nike Union Street's Technicolor Dream Stock

Have you ever noticed the hordes of women wearing gym clothes in Cow Hollow? You're not the only one. Union Street is a destination for workouts (Crunch, the new Equinox, SoulCycle, and Pilates ProWorks) and workout gear (Lululemon, Lorna Jane, and Lucy), so it was only a matter of time before Nike demanded a piece of the action. And that time has come.

Nike celebrated the opening of its shiny, new outpost at 2071 Union Street this morning with crowds, catering, and a DJ. But the glossy, white finishes and neon inventory within may not meet every shopper's needs.

The emphasis in the latest store is on women's apparel, which makes sense: Marina girls dress up for the gym, and Lululemon has become the de facto neighborhood uniform. If you want notice me workout clothes, you'll be pleased with the brightly-colored and patterned selection. If you're in the market for six different styles of black Nike tights, go to the original Nike SF store in Union Square.

Men will also fare better at the Post Street location. That store is a 50,000 square foot shrine to male athleticism, with a single level for the ladies. The 3,500 square foot Union Street store, by contrast, offers husbands and boyfriends a half-hearted apology of a men's section, stocked with a basic shoe selection alongside standard gym shorts and tops.

We predict serious athletes and Nike die-hards will keep shopping at Nike SF on Post Street for sport-specific gear, but the new store's location and apparel selection will make it a hot spot for the neighborhood gym bunnies.
