Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Four generations and more than 100 years of history stand behind 66Mint, purveyor of fine vintage jewelry and timepieces. Father-son duo Joseph and Marcus Chait opened the store last year, next door to the historic US Mint. It's a fitting location for a family business with nearly as much history: Marcus tells Haute Living that he keeps his grandfather's loop (the contraption that evaluates fine gems) on his desk to remind him of the family's principles of honesty and integrity.

The price point is high, but that's little surprise given the brands that 66Mint buys and sells. Bulgari, Cartier, Patek Philippe, and Van Cleef & Arpels are just a few that are regularly in stock. Browse the website to gain a feel for items and prices before scheduling a private appointment to view the vaults. The engagement ring selection offers a range in styles, but the nontraditional gem stones and the antique settings are its true strengths.
