Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

San Francisco is a town that values local craftsmanship. Just take a look through SFMade's list of manufacturers to see a diverse and dynamic group of brands that thrive in this city. And in a recent roundup from the Chronicle, it's exciting to see the close proximity between the designer and the customer that local manufacturing enables.

April in Paris offers leather accessories and its Hermès-trained owner/designer is readily available at her storefront to talk custom orders. And Marine Layer's design studio is combined with the brand's third retail location for transparency into the entire design process. Other brands like Taylor Stitch, Betabrand, and Chrome Industries, as well as Timbuk2 (not listed in the Chron piece), also follow similar workshop/factory models.
