There's a craftsmanship renaissance happening in the Bay, and West Oakland's Atelier Dion, with its beautiful handmade ceramics, is at the forefront. Jay and Rie Dion, the married couple behind the brand, got started after hearing from their former California College of the Arts faculty advisor Nathan Lynch, that local coffee shops wanted handcrafted mugs manufactured locally. "My proposal to Jay and Rie was that there is no one making small production runs of really well-designed, beautiful work," Lynch tells the Chronicle.

So that's exactly what the Dions did. They created custom runs for Four Barrel, The Mill, and Toms Roasting Co. using an electric kiln they bought with money that would have otherwise gone towards their honeymoon. How's that for baking a little love into every piece? Find Atelier Dion's hand-thrown ceramics in SF and in Oakland at Umami Mart, General Store, and The Workshop Residence. Or contact the brand directly for inquiries into custom projects.
