Carey Rockland has a swimmer's body—long, lean, and athletic. It's because she swam competitively for ten years with Olympians and world record holders before she moved to the Bay. Here, she dived into martial arts training and jiu-jitsu. She's pretty much a badass. Carey's also a people person with an innate ability to befriend you, putting you immediately at ease and at the ready for the strenuous training ahead. There's only one thing better than working out with a friend and that's working out with a hot friend. In one line, tell us about yourself.

I found my way into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2004 and have been addicted ever since—I currently co-run a self-defense business with a very badass weapons specialist.

Why did you become a trainer?

I became a trainer in 2004 after working in film for several years. I took a long look at what I wanted my lifestyle to be and decided that I wanted to "do for work what I do for fun." Being a part of clients' journeys to becoming the best version of themselves is about as rewarding as it gets for me. I wanted to be grounded and present in my work and be able to track tangible progress in a real world way. Training is awesome for that.

What advice would you offer to someone who is just starting in your class?

Advice to new participants in Bay-Fit, or to private clients, is to set your own pace. The best progress is slow and steady. Your body will adapt and lead you to the next level so don't force it. The whole experience is intended to be positive and health building, not depleting. Let the group experience be motivational. And allow yourself to have community support and have fun.

Tell us one fun fact about yourself.

I feel very strongly about rescuing pit bulls and have had them in my life since 2001.

If you weren't a trainer, what would you be?

If I wasn't a trainer I would want to be a paramedic firefighter—or I'd work with dogs.
