Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Women who work at Joyus never have to go home for an outfit do-over. All of the teams at the San Francisco-based online shopping site —business, creative, shipping, etc.— work out of the company's headquarters in the Mission. If a staffer gets a mid-day invite to a dinner or spills coffee on her dress, she just heads down to the warehouse to shop for a new outfit. And if she wants a second opinion, she can just ask one of the stylists in the office. If only every job came with the same perks...

Founder and CEO Sukhinder Singh Cassidy started the company because she believed that video would be the next big thing in online shopping. She dreamed of a site where fashion, beauty, and wellness experts would explain to shoppers how to wear the latest lipstick color or tricky fashion trend. That dream yielded a chic, yet accessible, reality. And while Joyus is known for its friendly expert tutorials, we discovered that the behind-the-scenes employees are just as stylish as the on-air hosts. (That warehouse full of the latest clothes and accessories can't hurt, right?) We decided to turn our camera on Joyus's off-camera staffers to learn more about their style and shopping habits.

Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, CEO/Founder, wearing a Black Swan dress, Treisi druzy ring, druzy necklace by Vanessa Mooney, and Vince Camuto boots.

Your closet is on fire! What three items do you save from the flames?

“Prada patent booties in nude, (I found them once but have never seen them again - so I can’t lose these), my mothers box (filled with the memories from my kids including their first booties, wristband from the hospital, cards and art), and a YSL vintage star necklace, (one of a kind statement piece that I couldn’t bear to lose).”

What fashion rule do you shamelessly break?

“I wear things much ‘younger’ than my age. I’ve been known to throw the 24 year old’s fast fashion item from Topshop onto my 44 year old body.”

What’s an item that you spent a lot of money on that you regret buying?

“A ridiculously expensive vintage handbag from a designer that I never use because the silhouette is totally impractical for carrying anything important, like my laptop. It’s gorgeous, but I’ve not used it once!”

Who is your style icon?

“All the Kates (Beckinsale, Blanchett, Middleton, Hudson). They are all structured, feminine, classic with some level of edge in their style.”

Kate Gronso, Director of Beauty wearing Paige Denim jeans, a Black Swan leather jacket, J Crew camisole, Avant Garde necklace, Treisi druzy ring, Banana Republic tiger bangle, Natasha Grasso hammered gold bangle, Kamryn Dame gold bangle, and Michael Kors pumps.

Your closet is on fire! What three items do you save from the flames?

“Ruffle-front trench coat from Anthropologie; Grandma’s wedding ring; worn-in, no-blister booties.”

What fashion rule do you shamelessly break?

“White after labor day - but is that even a rule anymore?”

What is your worst shopping habit?

“I shop online ALL THE TIME and sometimes I’m too lazy to return items so I end up keeping things I don’t love!”

Be honest: Have you ever been invited to an event during the workday, and found yourself shopping the Joyus warehouse for an outfit? What did you pick?

“Absolutely! Last Holiday I bought a fabulous sequined skirt by Drew - it’s one of my favorite sparkly pieces!”

Jennifer Sharp, Vice President of Partnerships, wearing James Jeans, Bella Dahl top, Tarte Fur vest, and a Leighelena jigsaw buckle bracelet.

Your closet is on fire! What three items do you save from the flames?

“My dark wash Paige skinny jeans times three. I'm tall, and it's hard to find pants that fit me just right. I can replace most things in my closet but not these.

What fashion rule do you shamelessly break?

“In general I think fashion rules beg to be broken; trend setters make exceptions and that's exciting. I'm on the more conservative side, and like to see examples of good rule-breaking before i take the leap.  It was actually a Joyus video that suggested mixing metals in accessories -- I felt so liberated and do it all the time now.”

What’s your favorite fashion item that you’ve ever bought?

“I have a hot pink fitted coat that looks good with everything. I love to wear it with jeans on a night out or over a little black dress. The color is flattering, and it always gives me energy.”

Esther Kang, Apparel Merchant, wearing a Bella Luxx top, Rag & Bone jeans and boots, and an Avant Garde necklace.

What fashion rule do you shamelessly break?

“Wearing white after labor day. I definitely don't think this rule applies anymore.”

What is your worst shopping habit?

“Buying multiples of my favorite items of the moment. ex: I have 5 pairs of espadrilles all bought within a 2 month period!”

What have you learned at Joyus that you never would have learned elsewhere?

“What B-roll is! B-roll is any shots of the models out on location where the host isn't speaking directly to the camera.”

Which trend do you really like, and which would you never be caught dead trying?
“Loving Soft pants in solids, prints, and athleisure styles. Crop tops look great on some people but I wouldn't dare try one myself.

Anna Putnam, Principal Engineer, wearing Blank NYC pants, a Gillian Julius bracelet, Daniel Rainn top, Anthropologie scarf, and Frye boots.

What is your worst shopping habit?

“T-shirts!  Even though I have them in every style and color I still am always on the hunt for the perfect tee.  When I find one I like I am known to buy it in multiple colors.”

What have you learned at Joyus that you never would have learned elsewhere?

“The power and draw of video.  Our hosts do a great job telling you exactly why to buy an item, and how to wear it; it is a powerful combination that makes me want to buy most of what we sell. Because I am confident in what I am getting - the guess work that usually comes with buying online is gone.”

Be honest: Have you ever been invited to an event during the workday, and found yourself shopping the Joyus warehouse for an outfit? What did you pick?

“All the time, mostly for vacations or last minute dinners with friends. I’m a busy mom of two, so I don’t have any time to shop - I can always find something in the warehouse that looks great and can pair with what I have.”

Theresa Petry, Director/GMM Apparel & Non-Apparel, wearing a Barney’s grey leather moto jacket, animal print top, James Jeans Twiggy oil slicked black jeans, Gillian Julius bracelet, Lisa Freede bracelet, Michele uptown diamond dial watch, custom made rings from Sao Paolo, druzy earrings from a NYC boutique, and Eileen Fisher boots.

Your closet is on fire! What three items do you save from the flames?

“Chanel Jackets, Celine Handbag, Prada Ostrich Bugatti bag.”

What item did you pass on that you wish you could go back in time and purchase?

“Hermes Orange 30cm Birkin Bag. My friend was the store Director in San Francisco and she called me and said “It’s now or never.” I waited two weeks before I called her back and it was already sold.”

What is your worst shopping habit?

“Spending money!”

Alex Buronova, Producer, wearing an Ella Moss Jumpsuit, Ettika bracelet, and Nine West shoes.

Your closet is on fire! What three items do you save from the flames?
“My favorite black cocktail Gucci dress that I wear to the fanciest of occasions, Kate Moss high waisted pants I have not been able to part with for a few years now, and shoes! All of them!”

What item did you pass on that you wish you could go back in time and purchase?

“It was a perfect black hat at some inexpensive store in Spain. I still think of it!”

Who is your style icon?

”Kate Moss - she’s fun.”

Be honest: Have you ever been invited to an event during the workday, and found yourself shopping the Joyus warehouse for an outfit? What did you pick?

“Not yet - but I think that day will come soon!”
