What's so special about this women's wearable, say you? Well, a lot, according to SF-based Tinsel CEO Aniyia Williams, who created the company's first piece to solve her own niggling problem: "I was tired of always having to dig around in my bag for headphones, untangling them, losing them, having them get worn out. I realized I really wanted to wear them on my body; however, I didn't want them to look like headphones."
Cue the Dipper, a stylin' bold necklace with fully functioning, premium headphones seamlessly integrated into it. (The hidden earbuds are genius.) Naturally, you can listen to music, summon Siri and take phone calls. But unlike many wearables, the Dipper doesn't use Bluetooth...it operates via the standard headphone plug-in. Translation: The piece never needs charging or syncing—one of the main hurdles of wearable adoption.
Other key features of the audio necklace include premium sound quality, choice of two color finishes (gold and gunmetal), microphone and three-button remote control, and earbuds designed to fit most women's ears.
Along with creating something she needed, proud mama Williams decided to enter the billion-dollar wearables market in order to fill a void—products designed specifically for women (by women). She set out to create jewelry using technology that serves a functional purpose without sacrificing style. Right on, sista.
"We feel that most hardware companies really aren't thinking about women when they design their products. Our needs tend to be an afterthought, so we're relegated to a pink or leopard-print edition of a one-size-fits-all solution. That's not good enough anymore. We can do better."
