Red can feel like a risky lip color, but, in the right shade, it can essentially do all the makeup heavy lifting. I often shy away from bold lips because my large lip size can overpower my face in bright hues. Jealous of those dainty mouths that can rock the wilder colors, I still gravitate toward lipstick displays in stores, just in case I can find a good match. And thanks to some guidance from a stylist at Veer & Wander, I discovered a rich blood red that I can actually wear without feeling self conscious.

The Ellis Faas Creamy Lips in L101 ($35) is the brand's signature red. It comes in a silver bullet-shaped package and glides on with a creamy (almost gloss-like) consistency. I like that it applies in layers, offering various levels of intensity. My only complaint is that it can wear off easily through the course of a day or evening. An easy fix: first use a nude lip liner all over the lips to help the color better adhere.

This shade of red should suit all skin tones. With lightly lined eyes and rosy cheeks, it creates a simple yet sophisticated look. But if you're unsure of how it would suit your complexion, visit Veer & Wander's apothecary to test the entire line from Ellis Faas. It's the only store in the city where you'll find this Mario Testino-approved, Dutch brand.
