SoMa Pier 1 Imports Store Closing; Big Sale Commences

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

If you haven't heard—or seen during a recent Nordstrom Rack or Trader Joe's run—the Pier 1 Imports at 555 Ninth Street is closing at the end of June. Until then, everything in the store is on sale (including fixtures) for 40 percent to 50 percent off.

As of yesterday, the shelves were still flush with barware, kitchen goods, and all manner of tchotchkes. There was, however, a certain electricity in the air as shoppers merrily calculated all the cash they would be saving. In other words, don't wait long to get over there—the best stuff will go fast.

Should you plan on making a beeline for the yummy Vanilla Crème candles, err, sorry, a certain reporter we know cleared them out. Good news is the Pier 1 in the Inner Richmond (3535 Geary Blvd) isn't going anywhere.
