A typical morning for Miguel Vargas, TRX Training Center coach, goes something like this: wake up well before dawn, take care of two-year-old daughter, head to the studio and unlock doors, flip on lights and dial in music playlist. And, finally, motivate a small army of early risers to find their better, stronger, healthier selves.
Clients don’t seem to mind getting their asses officially kicked by Miguel, who effectively juggles the responsibilities of fatherhood with motivating those who sign up for his sweaty, endorphin-packed sessions. As one fan put it: "He’s a hard-working papa and an amazing motivator who always squeezes every last ounce of effort out of your workout."
In one sentence, tell us about yourself.
I’m a husband, dad and coach who's living the dream.
What inspired you to become a trainer/fitness instructor?
I wanted to show people that you can have fun while working hard. If it were easy, everyone would be fit. You can find your "better" by showing up, and athletes will show up and work hard for a great coach.
What advice would you offer to someone who is just starting in your class?
I’ve got four rules: 1) If it hurts, don’t do it; 2) If you need a break, take one; 3) If it feels good, get after it; and 4) Try to smile and have fun. You didn’t come to class to pass an exam so don’t overthink it. This workout won’t be easy—you'll work hard.
Fun fact...go!
When I was 15, I ran from push-ups and pull-ups like the plague. Now I run at them!
If you weren’t in fitness, what would you be doing?
Probably selling something. That’s what I did before fitness. I was a big phone nerd.
What are your top three workout jams?
"2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted" by 2Pac; "Pump It Up" by Joe Budden; and "Hey Now (Mean Muggin’)" by Xzibit.
