Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Born and raised in the Bay Area, Gabrielle "Gabby" De Nigris grew up riding horses and has always felt connected to animals — so much so that her diet has been meatless since birth. (She’s also a full-on vegan foodie.) Indeed, Gabby's animal instincts take her outside all the time, with weekly mountain or road bike adventures.
She’s also upfront about the fact that she takes more classes than she teaches, because the camaraderie of a group is what truly brings out the beast in her. See and feel for yourself what this spin and group-fitness-certified instructor is all about at Core40 and Barry’s Bootcamp, where she starts teaching this month.
In one sentence, tell us about yourself.
I’m a California girl with the mouth of a sailor.
What inspired you to become a trainer/fitness instructor?
I’ve always been fascinated by the mind’s perception of limitations, knowing that we are all capable of more and often severely underestimating ourselves. Seeing people push past the moments they feel like slowing down or giving up is powerful. It reminds me that determination is everything. When I’m teaching, I feel so connected, so present. There is something magical about watching a group of people work their asses off together.
What advice would you offer to someone who is just starting in your class?
Don’t baby your body. Love your body, take care of it, but don’t be afraid to be uncomfortable or take yourself to the next level. There is ALWAYS more, but you have to be willing to find it!
Fun fact...go!
I am a huge animal lover and was raised as a vegetarian. I’m extremely passionate about a whole foods, plant-based diet—and to this day, I've never eaten meat. I've also been vegan for the past three years.
If you weren’t in fitness, what would you be doing?
I would be a beach bum, living on a tropical island drinking smoothies in the sunshine.
What are your top three workout jams?
"Outta Your Mind" by Lil’ Jon; "Beast" (Original Mix) by Thomas Gold; and "Hood Go Crazy" by Tech N9ne.
