Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
It’s moves like the "tap back body roll" that keep riders coming back for more of Todd Dunham's "badass-sexy" SoulCycle classes. This California native’s spin on cycling is that he strives to help riders discover that their inner strength can pack as much, if not more, power than their physical strength. Todd will push you to the sweaty edge but stands firm that the goal is progress, not perfection. You could say it’s his way of putting pedal to the mettle.
In one sentence, tell us about yourself.
Life adventurer, part-time wanderer, thriving carnivore, failed vegetarian, lover of all things dangerous.
What inspired you to become a trainer/fitness instructor?
When I can inspire others to break down their expectations and believe that their truth knows no limits, that's change! That's what keeps me coming back for more.
What advice would you offer to someone who is just starting in your class?
Do you! There’s no wrong way of doing this as long as you’re true to yourself, and listen to your body. Strength comes with the confidence to be ourselves and what better way to do it than to shake yo’ ass and let go while getting a killer workout.
Fun fact...go!
I’m a trained firefighter-EMT and amateur German beer connoisseur with a passion for puppies, and Tom Hardy.
If you weren’t in fitness, what would you be doing?
If I wasn’t teaching at SoulCycle and working for the fire department, I’d be creating art and music. I have been an artist for as long as I can remember, focusing on spray paint as my medium. I would also be incorporating my musical sense into producing beats and tracks to collaborate with other up-and-coming performers. I love the creativity!
What are your top three workout jams?
"Burn" (Merzo and Olly James Remix) by KSHMR and Dallas K; "F.E.A.R." (A.Skillz Remix) by Ian Brown; and "Titans" by Razihel and Aero Chord.
